![]() ![]() We begin teaching music at Trinity Episcopal, providing programming for first, second, and third-graders. The summer of 2014 marked the first time our students participate in out-of-state programming as part of the Sacramento Youth Symphony summer chamber music workshop in California. We successfully started a second music program at Blackshear Fine Arts Academy, offering 5th-grade strings education. The inaugural Fall Into Music instrument drive takes place in the fall of 2013, collecting hundreds of donated instruments for Austin Soundwaves and multiple area music education organizations. Our alumni number over 200 since graduating our first class of students from high school in 2016 #Soundwaves of music fullWe have over 30 full and part-time staff, more than 20 of whom are teaching artists Our community-based ensembles, Mariachi Para Todos and the Community Symphony are intergenerational performing groups, serving students ages 16 to 65 and up We provide and support both in-school and afterschool programming We serve over nearly 700 students across 14 partner schools in Austin metro Most recently in 2021, we received startup funding to launch Sounding Board, an online training platform and resource library available to schools and nonprofits nationwide. In 2018, we created the Draylen Mason Fellows Program, an interdisciplinary creative youth development program, in honor of the young bassist and longtime Soundwaves student killed in the Austin bombings earlier that spring. In 2015, we launched the Austin Music Education Coalition to bring together smaller schools throughout the region to perform as a community. Since 2013, we have coordinated the Fall Into Music instrument drive, providing more than 3,500 instruments to 20 different schools and nonprofits. We currently have ongoing partnerships with local nonprofit music organizations, universities, school districts, summer camps, community centers, and social services agencies throughout the region. They also have opportunities to participate in our organization’s decision-making process by serving as section leaders, interns, paid staff, and advisory council members, with the goal to have an alumni board member by 2023.Ĭollaborations and partnerships are critical components of our work and systems-change approach and are committed to leading and supporting collective impact and systems-change initiatives. Our programming meets year-round, with students participating an average of 9 hours per week during the academic year. In addition to daily rehearsals and frequent performances, students take part in after-school lessons, mentoring, and field trips. Our students also gain experience planning and leading performances and community events. Program alumni have served as paid staff and are represented on our advisory council and committees, and regularly participate in our hiring and decision-making processes.Īustin Soundwaves students primarily learn music drawn from the orchestral and wind ensemble literature, as well as styles such as mariachi and jazz. Students in our programs have achieved 100% graduation rates and currently attend colleges throughout Texas and the United States with majors as varied as architecture, music, and geology. #Soundwaves of music professionalOur programs have grown and evolved since 2011, including orchestra, band, chamber music, music theory, composition, intergenerational ensembles such as Mariachi Para Todos and the Soundwaves Community Symphony, and interdisciplinary programs that help students achieve personal and professional success. ![]() We now count over 200 alumni and the goal to serve 1,000 students per year by fall 2024. We were founded as an El Sistema-inspired program in 2011 and our programs have grown from 42 students at a single site in East Austin to nearly 700 students in grades K-12 across 14 partner schools and all ages in our community programs. ![]()
